IDEA: How to do market research like Microsoft

So the new Xbox one has been announced and the response has been a little underwhelming to say the least. Criticisms include that it looks rubbish (like a cheap DVD player I have seen mentioned), not as powerful as the ps4, that it will charge for using pre-owned games and lack of backwards compatability. Add to this the criticisms of the current Xbox, namely that it charges to use the internet, and potential customers appear turned off. More worrying for Microsoft, their stock price dropped after the reveal and Sony’s increased. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…

IDEA: 5 ways Twitter can be used for organised crime

I saw a report yesterday about a hacked tweet that cost millions.

“The 143-point fall in the Dow Jones industrial average came after hackers sent a message from the Twitter feed of the Associated Press, saying the White House had been hit by two explosions and that Barack Obama was injured. The fake tweet, which was immediately corrected by Associated Press employees, caused a sensation on Twitter and in the stock market.”

- Guardian website

It got me thinking, if one tweet can affect the stock market by millions of dollars, this could be very dangerous. Quite simply, if you hack a large corporation’s twitter feed (or one of their high profile employees) and post some bad news, their share value will drop. This would be the perfect time to invest as the truth will quickly be discovered and the market will rectify itself in time. This could be worth millions to organised crime.

I’m wondering if there are other ways twitter can be used to benefit criminals. It could be simple revenge or defamatory tweets or more complicated dating scams. Let’s see how many you can come up with.

IDEA: 5 examples of Think Tank bullshit!

(Ok, the first paragraph doesn’t seem to link well to the headline, but it will come together) City University in London has been accused of discrimination after it closed a room used by it’s Muslim students for friday prayers. This could have serious consequences as universities have a large number of Muslim students, particularly among the post-graduates, which take on a lot from overseas. The timetables make little allowances for fridays (unless you do communication studies, in which case there’s little point going anyway) so having somewhere on campus to pray is essential to many.

When I first saw this story I was a bit disappointed with the university, but when I looked into the reasons behind it, I was simply appalled. Basically, the university wanted them to submit their sermons for “approval” before they could use them. Understandably, they refused, as would I. They argued that their prayer sessions are open to all, so if the university were worried about what was being said they could always just turn up. As a result, they were shut down. So how did the university come up with this ridiculous idea? A fucking think tank told them to!

This think tank is called Quilliam Foundation, which focuses on counter extremism. To my amazement, it actually has Muslims in it! They said that  hard line views and a confrontational atmosphere were being encouraged at prayers. No shit! I think they might have actually been paid to come to that conclusion! The bit that the university obviously missed out on is that it is a very small minority who spread extremist views and the vast majority of Muslims are peaceful. Therefore, they decided to treat their students like criminals under suspicion. I’m not surprised the students told them where to go.

Anyway, rant over. New rant starting. Every time I read a story involving a “think tank”, it’s always bollocks. It’s either poorly researched, pointing out the bloody obvious or just wrong. Take this story, saying that the NHS should cut 30,000 beds to save money. Well yeah, less beds is less expenditure, anyone who’s ever studied any form of mathematics will tell you that. In fact, the government would save shit loads by just scrapping the NHS. Maybe I should call myself a think tank and propose that, I might get paid for it. I seem to recall a story a few years back where a think tank said that the north of England was fucked and we should all move to down south, whilst not saying how southern areas would cope with the dramatic population increase. Maybe they should just send death squads to northern cities and wipe out the population. It would save the NHS money as well.

So it can’t be difficult to come up with a few examples of think tanks talking rubbish. Make a list, just try and keep the language clean like I haven’t.

IDEA: Top 10 Prince Philip “moments”

Our favourite politically incorrect royal has been at it again. On a recent visit to  Luton and Dunstable Hospital, he joked to a Filipino nurse, “The Philippines must be half empty – you’re all here running the NHS”. Fortunately, she laughed ,as did most of us who read the story.

This is not the first time he’s nearly found himself in trouble with such comments though. He’s nearly as famous for his risky jokes as he is for being married to the queen. It got me wondering, what are his best comments over the years. There have to be plenty to chose from. Make a list, post it online and make us all smile.

IDEA: Dodgy film descriptions

As I sit here getting ready to watch Pixar’s “Up”, it occured to me that the movie  may not be as sweet as it seems. At first glance, it appears to be a film about an old man’s journey to get over the loss of his wife and the building of the relationship with him and a local boy. However, an alternative description could be along the lines of “elederly man abducts impressionable child and flees  South America”.

It reminded me of a description of “The Wizard of Oz” I heard a while back. It was “Transferred to a surreal landscape, a young girl kills the first person she meets then teams up with 3 strangers to kill again”. This made it into an Irish TV magazine, although if you ask me this sounds like a better film.

It’s got me thinking, there must be plenty of other movies where this could be done. Make a list of the best dodgy descriptions you can think of and see if it entertains.
